five asian authors i want to love

It’s the Year Of The Asian, everyone, so obviously I’m going to have at least one post a month relating to either Asian books, bloggers or authors!*

There are a number of Asian authors who have been published over the last few years, and who are debuting this year. I am very excited about a lot of this, and I am looking forward to more, but in this post, I will be talking about authors who have published before 2019 and whose books are on my TBR, but I have not, for whatever reason, been able to read yet.

  • S.K. Ali’s Saints And Misfits has been on my TBR since the first I heard of it, but something has always kept me from picking it up. But now Love From A To Z is out, and I am hoping that the local bookstore will sell them together so I can get both at the same time! S.K. Ali seems so wonderful as a person, and everybody has such good things to say about her writing, so I am excited.
  • Now that Sabaa Tahir’s An Ember Of Ashes series is 3 books in, I really need to pick it up. I’ve heard nothing but good things about it from bloggers I admire and whose tastes I trust, so there’s really nothing from stopping me. Except for the fact that I can’t find all three books in the same bookstore – one is always missing… Hopefully soon though!

  • I’ve heard so many people raving about R.F. Kuang’s The Poppy War, and the writing, and now the sequel, and it has been on my TBR since I first heard about it. Unfortunately, it’s been pretty expensive still for me to buy, and there’s no library close enough to me to check if it’s in stock yet, so I’m hoping for a sale soon!
  • I’m still very upset that Sangu Mandanna’s A Spark Of White Fire doesn’t seem to be available in any of the local bookstores because I want to read it so badly. It’s a retelling of the Mahabharata IN SPACE. You have no idea how excited I am about this, and how much I want to break my book buying ban to order this.
  • Rin Chupeco has a new book coming out later this year and the cover is gorgeous, and one more next year that looks really good to, but honestly it’s all the gushing I’ve heard from Shealea @ Shut Up, Shealea and Kate @ Your Tita Kate about The Bone Witch trilogy is the main reason I need to read everything she writes. I saw the first of the trilogy in a bookstore a couple of days ago, but again, hoping for it to be packaged together and go on sale soon.

There are a number of authors I really need to check out soon, and a number whose books are coming out this year, but not all their books are available locally and exchange rates make things very expensive, so I do fall behind on reading. These are all authors I want to try and read this year though, and I am waiting for the HUGE SALE that sometimes happens in July – or to convince someone to buy me books for my birthday.

Who are some of your favourite Asian authors I absolutely have to read?

I’m Ara, a Southeast Asian writer who someday hopes to have published a novel, and who is currently losing herself in the worlds created by others. I love books and food and television and blogging and I get distracted and sidetracked easily.
