;13 literary characters that would be fun to dress up as for Halloween

bookworm things

It’s Halloween! This might have been a better post for earlier in the month, or use it as ideas for next year. But I figured, why not post it anyway!

I used to go trick-or-treating as a kid, even though it’s not a huge thing in Singapore. Luckily for us though, we were a whole bunch of relatives living close to one another, and my uncle celebrates his birthday on Halloween, and he loved having everyone end the celebration at his place with a small party.

It also happens to be my mother-in-law’s birthday, so I’m dressing up my daughter as Boo from Monsters’ Inc and we’re going to take pictures.

13 literary characters for halloween

I’ve never actually dressed up as any of these characters, but I feel like it would be fun to! I think the last time I actually dressed up for Halloween was for a scare walk event I went on with friends, and I went as a closet cosplay version of The Evil Queen from Once Upon A Time. It was definitely fun, and I may eventually post a photo? We’ll see!

  • Harry Potter, or any Hogwarts student.
(Duh! Like all of us haven’t wanted to go to Hogwarts.)
  • Clary Fray, or any Shadowhunter.
(It’s relatively easy to put together too. Think about it and come back and tell me it’s not.)
  • Dracula.
(Or, you know, any generic vampire works?)
  • Frankenstein.
(Not the monster, but actual Doctor Victor Frankenstein, because all you need is a lab coat, really.)
  • Artemis Fowl.
(Now I don’t really know this series, but I feel like it’d be a fun thing?)

  • Hannibal Lector.
(You can go with the orange prison jumpsuit, or wear a fancy suit and carry a plate with a body part. Creep factor 100%.)
  • Kaz Brekker.
(Or any of the other Dregs, I suppose. For Kaz, it’s easy. All black, gloves, and a cane. For the other Dregs, well, bright colours that would otherwise hurt your eyes, maybe?)
  • Sophie Hatter.
(Look, I’m not talking about young!Sophie. I’m talking about old!Sophie. Gray up your hair, bun it up, maybe, add a hat, and a long dress. Dress like a grandma?)
  • Bilbo Baggins. or Frodo Baggins, or any Hobbit.
(Make sure you’re not going somewhere where being barefoot will hurt. Or make prosthetic big feet? And carry food with you, because why not, right?)
  • Hamlet.
(Literally, just find a plastic skull and carry that around with you and you’re gold.)

scifi2

  • An Austen Hero.
(No, seriously, wear a fancy suit, a cravat, and go around telling people how much you ardently admire them and if you loved them less, maybe you could speak of it more. Get a friend to dress up as an Austen Scoundrel and carry out a mock duel. Actually, maybe just have an Austen Halloween party.)
  • Daenerys Stormborn of the House Targaryen, the First of Her Name, The Unburnt, Queen of the Andals, the Rhoynar and the First Men, Queen of Meereen, Khaleesi of the Great Grass Sea, Protector of the Realm, Lady Regnant of the Seven Kingdoms, Breaker of Chains and Mother of Dragons.
(Blonde wig, long dress and three stuffed dragons in a basket on your arm. You’re welcome, world.)
  • Miss Trunchbull.
(Or you could go as Matilda or Miss Honey or something, but I recently saw an Umbridge/Miss Trunchbull photoshoot and there’s honestly nothing more terrifying than that thought.)

Okay, so my list is a little unusual. But can you deny it would be fun to dress up as these characters? Especially if your group of friends plays along?

Happy Halloween, everyone!
