;five books I recommended to everyone this year
It’s a little bit weird for me, to be posting things on the blog back to back. I’m more of a once a week person, it’s much easier on my mental health. I’ll be going back to that in January, unless Shealea or some other awesome person comes up with another thing I can take part with. More information and the full #Project14Lists can be found here. As most people in my life know, I will talk about books to everyone. I say ‘to’ instead of ‘with’ because most of the people in my life just indulge me but aren’t actually as in love with books as I am. Thankfully,…

SPOTLIGHT; #Project14Lists
We interrupt our regular schedule to bring you this post. Well, technically, my regular schedule for the month was just going to be a wrap-up post for the year. Which I’ll still be doing at the very end of the year. But also a few days ago I finally had a chance to sit and read Shealea @ That Bookshelf Bitch‘s blogging anniversary post and found out about #Project14Lists. The fact that I had not heard about it before confused me, at first, before I remembered I’ve been very inactive on social media. And as much as I love to try to stay on top of things, I fall behind.…

review; the first star to fall
The First Star To Fall by Diana Peterfreund Discover how it all began… New Pacifica was designed to be a tropical paradise, a refuge for humanity filled with natural wonders and technological marvels. A place of perfect peace, where “war” was only a war out of ancient history – or so the privileged teenage aristocrat Persis Blake had always been taught. But then comes the revolution and the death of a queen, and suddenly it’s no longer enough for Persis to trust the words of her parents, the lessons of her teachers, and the decrees of the men in power. One terrible night, Persis witnesses the truth: there are those…

review; for darkness shows the stars
For Darkness Shows The Stars by Diana Peterfreund It’s been several generations since a genetic experiment gone wrong caused the Reduction, decimating humanity and giving rise to a Luddite nobility who outlawed most technology. Elliot North has always known her place in this world. Four years ago Elliot refused to run away with her childhood sweetheart, the servant Kai, choosing duty to her family’s estate over love. Since then the world has changed: a new class of Post-Reductionists is jumpstarting the wheel of progress, and Elliot’s estate is foundering, forcing her to rent land to the mysterious Cloud Fleet, a group of shipbuilders that includes renowned explorer Captain Malakai Wentforth…

RACEBENT ROMCOMS; when in rome
I have a ridiculous amount of love for this movie. It is unashamedly one of my favourites, even if it is ridiculously white. Racebent Romcoms has me taking existing Hollywood romantic comedies (and romances), and recasting them for the modern day with a more diverse cast. Featuring Jessica Parker Kennedy as Beth Martin and Henry Golding as Nick Beamon. Honey, you cannot learn from my mistakes. You’re going to have to go out there and make your own. Now, you could get your heart broken or you could have the greatest love affair the world has ever known, but you’re not going to know unless you try.

instant to-read; the greek mythology edition
I think that I’ve only read maybe two things that are explicitly inspired by Greek mythology. Maybe a few more that take things from the myths, but honestly these myths have become so wide-spread that possibly a lot of things have some inspiration from them? Still, if we’re talking reimaginings and re-tellings, there are a few myths I would love to see more things of*. But also, less movies retreading on these myths unless it’s 100% more diverse, thanks Hollywood. *I don’t know so much about Greek mythology outside of a few things, but based on my loose understanding, these are what I would like more of. The Trojan War…

recipe; tofu krapao
I have wanted to make krapao for YEARS. It is my absolute favourite Thai dish, and I could eat it almost every day and not get sick of it. But making a good krapao, getting it just right? I used to think if my mother couldn’t do it, I couldn’t either, right? Wrong! (Not that my mother’s krapao is bad or anything, it’s just not to my taste. Sorry, Mama!) Krapao, or bai krapao, for the confused, is a Thai basil stir-fry. In this case, it is a Thai basil stir-fry with tofu and veggies. Which veggies? Whichever you have on hand! I got this recipe almost three years ago…

TWISTED TALES; little red riding hood
I’d assume this story would be a little more gory and dark, due to the aged up character. I just love her very much so. Twisted Tales is a series of photosets depicting POC fancasts of fairytales that are traditionally cast as not-POC. Featuring: America Ferrera as Little Red Riding Hood Diahann Carroll as the Grandmother Manu Bennett as the Wolf Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje as the Huntsman Red Riding Hood, however, quickly fetched great stones with which they filled the wolf’s belly, and when he awoke, he wanted to run away, but the stones were so heavy that he collapsed at once, and fell dead.

review; among the nameless stars
Among The Nameless Stars by Diana Peterfreund Before Kai joined the Cloud Fleet, he wandered… AMONG THE NAMELESS STARS. Four years before the events of FOR DARKNESS SHOWS THE STARS, the servant Kai left the North Estate, the only home he’d ever known, and Elliot North, the only girl he ever loved, in search of a better life. But the journey was not an easy one. Featuring narrow escapes, thrilling boat races and at least one deadly volcanic wasteland. Review:

RACEBENT ROMCOMS; you’ve got mail
There are problematic elements to this movie, but it’s still a classic. Switch it up and turn it around, and you could get a heck of a remake! Racebent Romcoms has me taking existing Hollywood romantic comedies (and romances), and recasting them for the modern day with a more diverse cast. Featuring Jamie Chung as Jo(e) Fox and Ricky Whittle as Kevin (Kathleen) Kelly. “So much of what I see reminds me of something I read in a book, when shouldn’t it be the other way around? I don’t really want an answer. I just want to send this cosmic question out into the void.”
