    ;my go-to feel good movies

    This month has been A Lot. I have been lax on my social media accounts – both personal and shop accounts – because it’s just been emotional upheaval after emotional upheaval and I’ve been struggling to keep myself from going under. I’m managing, somehow, to keep myself afloat. Which is why I thought it was the perfect time to talk about my favourite movies to watch every time I want to see something that makes me happy. I went through a period where I was watching one of these movies every week, if not every other day. I make a lot of lists, don’t I? In no particular order: The…

    TWISTED TALES || the little mermaid

    As far as I know, in the original tale, the characters were never named, so I gave them the names they had in the animation. If this were ever a movie, I’d say it was a mix between the original tale and the animation, taking elements from both. Twisted Tales is a series of photosets depicting POC fancasts of fairytales that are traditionally cast as not-POC. Feautring: Meagan Rath as Ariel Daniel Henney as Eric Octavia Spencer as Ursula Michelle Yeoh as Vanessa Oh, did not the youngest sister listen eagerly to all these descriptions? and afterwards, when she stood at the open window looking up through the dark blue…

    review; this is what happy looks like

    This Is What Happy Looks Like by Jennifer E. Smith When teenage movie star Graham Larkin accidentally sends small town girl Ellie O’Neill an email about his pet pig, the two seventeen-year-olds strike up a witty and unforgettable correspondence, discussing everything under the sun, except for their names or backgrounds. Then Graham finds out that Ellie’s Maine hometown is the perfect location for his latest film, and he decides to take their relationship from online to in-person. But can a star as famous as Graham really start a relationship with an ordinary girl like Ellie? And why does Ellie want to avoid the media’s spotlight at all costs?   Review:

    RACEBENT ROMCOMS || 27 dresses

    I have started making these again because I didn’t want to fall behind on a feature I actually enjoy having on my blog. Still playing around with colouring and PSDs on Photoshop, but back at it and having fun! Racebent Romcoms has me taking existing Hollywood romantic comedies (and romances), and recasting them for the modern day with a more diverse cast. Featuring Gina Rodriguez as Jane Nichols and John Cho as Kevin Doyle. “So when the bride comes in and she makes her giant, grand entrance, I like to glance back at the poor bastard getting married. ‘Cause even though I think he’s an idiot for willingly entering into…

    handle with care; the shakespeare edition

    As much as I enjoy Shakespeare, I have to admit to having seen and heard and read aspects of it that make me shake my head and sigh in disappointment. Shakespeare was a product of his times, and as much as I acknowledge that he was progressive for his time, sometimes that means when you play it straight, it’s regressive for our time. Does that make sense? There are adaptations I’ve seen that could have been a touch better if they had adapted the parts that are now problematic to give more agency to other characters, or to subvert what is in the actual play. Shakespeare would not mind, I’m…

    recipe; easiest nutella brownies

    My sister and I found this recipe years ago, when our brother came home from a trip and at 10 something at night, asks us to make him something with Nutella. Nutella sandwiches were not allowed. So we browsed the ‘Net and stumbled across this recipe. It was easy, it was quick, and best of all? We had all the ingredients on hand so we didn’t need to go hunting for them! As always, we don’t use eggs in anything, so we substituted it out, and the three ingredient brownies became a four ingredient brownies, and it tastes lovely and fudgey and honestly, now I want to make a batch.…

    TWISTED TALES || cinderella

    As much as I love the recent movie because Lily James and Richard Madden are quite brilliant, I would love (another) diverse take on Cinderella. The 1997 musical version of it remains one of my favourites because the story is amazing, the music is wonderful, and the cast is just perfect. Twisted Tales is a series of photosets depicting POC fancasts of fairytales that are traditionally cast as not-POC. Featuring: Jessica Lucas as Cinderella Godfrey Gao as the Prince Melissa Ponzio as the Fairy Godmother Tia Carrere as the Stepmother She rose hastily, and flew away like a startled fawn. The prince attempted to follow her, but she was too…

    review; fairest

    Fairest by Marissa Meyer In this stunning bridge book between Cress and Winter in the bestselling Lunar Chronicles, Queen Levana’s story is finally told. Mirror, mirror on the wall, Who is the fairest of them all? Fans of the Lunar Chronicles know Queen Levana as a ruler who uses her “glamour” to gain power. But long before she crossed paths with Cinder, Scarlet, and Cress, Levana lived a very different story – a story that has never been told… until now. RACEBENT ROMCOMS || how to lose a guy in 10 days

    This is actually the last of my already made photosets, but I do have a few more planned that I am hoping to make in the next week or so. Racebent Romcoms has me taking existing Hollywood romantic comedies (and romances), and recasting them for the modern day with a more diverse cast. Featuring Lucy Liu as Andie Anderson and Oscar Isaac as Ben Barry. “You wanted to lose a guy in ten days, congratulations, you did it. You just lost him.”

    ;the things about new adult

    Did you know I’ve not been able to find books that would fall under the New Adult classification in bookstores near me? I mean, until about a year ago, I used to think that New Adult books just weren’t there. Now I’ve realised the stories I am writing could probably be more accurately classified as New Adult rather than Young Adult, though there are overlaps. If you look at my bookshelves, despite the fact that I am closer to 30 than 20, most of my books fall under the Young Adult bracket. The stories are diverse and empathic and the characters are well-rounded and three-dimensional, and you can find something…
