Obsidio
by Amie Kaufman & Jay Kristoff

Kady, Ezra, Hanna, and Nik narrowly escaped with their lives from the attacks on Heimdall station and now find themselves crammed with 2,000 refugees on the container ship, Mao. With the jump station destroyed and their resources scarce, the only option is to return to Kerenza 0 but who knows what they’ll find seven months after the invasion?

Meanwhile, Kady’s cousin, Asha, survived the initial BeiTech assault and has joined Kerenza’s ragtag underground resistance. When Rhys – an old flame from Asha’s past – reappears on Kerenza, the two find themselves on opposite sides of the conflict.

With time running out, a final battle will be waged on land and in space, heroes will fall, and hearts will be broken.

Review:

Everybody already knows how much I loved the first two books in this series, so is it any surprise I loved this one as well? It took me ages to get my hands on a copy, but once I did, well, I flew through the book.

SO. GOOD.

AIDAN is chilling, as ever. Such a Big Picture character, which makes for a fantastic foil against the completely human reactions and emotions of Kady, Ezra, Hanna & Nik. I loved the way it was written, and I loved its’ arc’s end, which I am not going to spoil for anyone who has yet to read the book.

I did not expect to find BioTech characters likeable, but while some of them I wanted to punch in the face, some of them weren’t that bad. And Asha? I adored her. She actually reminds me of some of the characters I’ve wanted to write, but a little more rough around the edges, a little more volatile. Her and Rhys were wonderfully developed, and their story was painful but believable, and the whole thing was just done very well.

The whole trilogy just portrays the greed of corporations and their lack of empathy really well, and in this time and state of the world, it made for a more chilling read than it might otherwise have done.

I’m Ara, a Southeast Asian writer who someday hopes to have published a novel, and who is currently losing herself in the worlds created by others. I love books and food and television and blogging and I get distracted and sidetracked easily.
