Vampire Academy
by Richelle Mead

St. Vladimir’s Academy isn’t just any boarding school—it’s a hidden place where vampires are educated in the ways of magic and half-human teens train to protect them. Rose Hathaway is a Dhampir, a bodyguard for her best friend Lissa, a Moroi Vampire Princess. They’ve been on the run, but now they’re being dragged back to St. Vladimir’s—the very place where they’re most in danger…

Rose and Lissa become enmeshed in forbidden romance, the Academy’s ruthless social scene, and unspeakable nighttime rituals. But they must be careful lest the Strigoi—the world’s fiercest and most dangerous vampires—make Lissa one of them forever.

Review:

A few years ago, I might have loved this series. As it was, I got about half way through before returning it to the library. It’s a well-written novel, characters are interesting (I really love Lissa and Christian especially) but I think I might have grown out of the vampire phase.

I might come back to this someday, finish up on it. Until done, I’m going to watch the movie, enjoy the art on tumblr and let my friends gush at me about the story.

I’m Ara, a Southeast Asian writer who someday hopes to have published a novel, and who is currently losing herself in the worlds created by others. I love books and food and television and blogging and I get distracted and sidetracked easily.

Perhaps it wasnt the right time to read the book. Gve it a try some other time. If the plot was okay and the characters too then maybeyou might like it the second time around

Might I suggest J.L. Armentrout’s Covenant series? They’re quite similar in the sense that there are three races, girl belongs to the one that guards the pures against evil monsters and she falls in love with instructor. Only, it’s all greek mythology here.

I did like Vampire Academy but meh, I was already not so into vampires by the time I was reading it so if you’re looking for more or less the same thing ( a bit more epic though if I may just say so XD), then the Covenant series might be a good match! If you’d finished Vampire Academy, I would’ve recommended the spin-off series, Bloodlines, which I enjoyed much more than Vampire Academy itself. A bit more slow-paced at times but them romance was better and so awesome!

Ohhh, I’ve never heard of the Covenant series but it seems awesome! I shall definitely check the books out, they do seem like my cup of tea.

And yup, I think that was my problem too. I had overdone the whole vampire stories thing, and now I’m just – not that into them. Maybe someday I’ll give these series (VA & Bloodlines) a try again. Thanks for the recommendations!

I might pick it up again someday. You’re right, it might just not have been the right time. (: I think I’d gotten too sick of vampire stories at that point in time…
