TWISTED TALES || snow white
This is the first of the second of the two new features I am starting on my blog. These are not going to involve much preface, but as a recap: Twisted Tales is a series of photosets depicting POC fancasts of fairytales that are traditionally cast as not-POC. Featuring; Rinko Kikuchi as Snow White Ming Na Wen as the Queen Aldis Hodge as the Prince But hardly had she a bit of it in her mouth than she fell down dead. Then the Queen looked at her with a dreadful look, and laughed aloud and said, “White as snow, red as blood, black as ebony-wood! this time the dwarfs cannot…

review; shut out
Shut Out by Kody Keplinger Most high school sports teams have rivalries with other schools. At Hamilton High, it’s a civil war: the football team versus the soccer team. And for her part, Lissa is sick of it. Her quarterback boyfriend, Randy, is always ditching her to go pick a fight with the soccer team or to prank their locker room. And on three separate occasions Randy’s car has been egged while he and Lissa were inside, making out. She is done competing with a bunch of sweaty boys for her own boyfriend’s attention. Lissa decides to end the rivalry once and for all: She and the other players’ girlfriends…

RACEBENT ROMCOMS || the princess bride
Last week, I wrote a blog post about starting two new features on my blog. These are not going to involve much preface, but as a recap: Racebent Romcoms has me taking existing Hollywood romantic comedies (and romances), and recasting them for the modern day with a more diverse cast. Featuring Tyler Posey as Westley and Keke Palmer as Buttercup. ‘Since the invention of the kiss, there have been five kisses rated the most passionate, the most pure. This one left them all behind.’

;my three favourite book-to-movie adaptations
On-screen adaptations tend to be a hit or miss with people. They either love them or they hate them. Sometimes they hate them before they even see the finished products. Bookworms, after all, tend to be very passionate creatures. We hold books close to our hearts, and if what ends up on screen isn’t what we imagined, well, then, we’re going to talk about it. A lot. I will admit, I tend to be very critical about adaptations. I can and will watch them! But you can bet that I will be nit-picky when I break down what was done right and wrong. I’m no expert, but I have Opinions,…

the bullet journal life; things to love
I took a break from my bullet journal for almost two months, and it was the best thing I could have done for myself. One of the greatest things about bullet journalling, in my opinion, is that you aren’t constrained by fixed pages. You can tailor it for yourself. You can skip a week, or a month, or a year, to try and figure out what works for you and what doesn’t and then you can come back to it. Or not. In the end, it is all up to you. Can it be a lot of pressure? Sure. But that’s why you step away for a little bit. Bullet…

TWISTED TALES || RACEBENT ROMCOMS
I’ve been considering posting this new feature over here for a while, and some time ago, I held a poll on Twitter about whether or not to do so. I got a resounding “Yes!” from the few people who responded so I guess we’re doing this. What is this? Twisted Tales started off as a series of photosets depicting POC fancasts of fairytales that are traditionally cast as not-POC. It started when the casting of Beauty And The Beast was announced, and sort of spiralled from there. I have been posting the photosets on Tumblr for a while now, and have more in the planning stages, and am always taking…

review; a midsummer’s nightmare
A Midsummer’s Nightmare by Kody Keplinger Whitley Johnson’s dream summer with her divorcé dad has turned into a nightmare. She’s just met his new fiancée and her kids. The fiancée’s son? Whitley’s one-night stand from graduation night. Just freakin’ great. Worse, she totally doesn’t fit in with her dad’s perfect new country-club family. So Whitley acts out. She parties. Hard. So hard she doesn’t even notice the good things right under her nose: a sweet little future stepsister who is just about the only person she’s ever liked, a best friend (even though Whitley swears she doesn’t “do” friends), and a smoking-hot guy who isn’t her stepbrother…at least, not yet.…

handle with care; the fairytale retelling edition
Every time a fairytale gets reimagined, I get excited. I’ve said that a lot. But it’s true. There’s just something magical about the same story being told in so many different ways. Sometimes it is a hit, and sometimes not so much. It can be the writing, sometimes, that does not excite me. But sometimes it’s the fact that the original tale hit a mark these retellings did not. Not to say I won’t read them. I am a simple woman with simple desires and fairytales are always welcome. It’s just more likely that I will find a copy I can borrow at a library for these tales. I suppose…

recipe; chocolate chip oatmeal cookies
Oatmeal cookies, even with chocolate chips, are considered somewhat healthier than normal cookies. Right? I like to believe that anyway. These cookies are yum. I’ve made them multiple times to take for prayers and every time, I get rave reviews. This time? I had a cousin come up to me and tell me if I went to visit my parents without these cookies, she was sending me back home to make her some. Definitely taking that as a compliment. The original recipe calls them the ‘perfect’ chocolate chip oatmeal cookie. I made amendments because a) my family does not consume eggs, and b) most instant pudding mixes (which are apparently…

review; this shattered world
This Shattered World by Amie Kaufman & Meagan Spooner Jubilee Chase and Flynn Cormac should never have met. Lee is captain of the forces sent to Avon to crush the terraformed planet’s rebellious colonists, but she has her own reasons for hating the insurgents. Rebellion is in Flynn’s blood. Terraforming corporations make their fortune by recruiting colonists to make the inhospitable planets livable, with the promise of a better life for their children. But they never fulfilled their promise on Avon, and decades later, Flynn is leading the rebellion. Desperate for any advantage in a bloody and unrelentingly war, Flynn does the only thing that makes sense when he and…
