    handle with care; the covers edition

    “Never judge a book by its’ cover”? Psht, yeah. Like I’ve actually listened to that. When it comes to books, anyway. As I mentioned in the other half of my covers edition, the cover attracts me to the book. If you can’t attract me at first glance, then I’m not going to bother checking the synopsis. Shallow, yeah, but I’m not perfect. Just close to it. Sometimes the cover is intriguing. Not exactly pretty, but something about it is catching the eye. So I may have picked them up, liked the synopsis, and then kept the book. Sometimes an intriguing cover can let you down, though, so be careful! If…

    ;five romances for the big screen

    When I realised today’s post was going to go live on Valentine’s Day, of course I decided I was writing about romances. Honestly, I read romances when I am in a bit of a reading slump. They’re almost always light and easy enough for me to enjoy and get back into reading. So I figured, let’s make a list of these fun romances I’ve read that I would love to see translated onto the big screen! In no particular order, here are some of the romances I have enjoyed so much that I would not mind seeing them made into movies. Which, coming from someone who is always critical of…

    ;the bullet journal life

    In the last quarter of last year, I started getting into bullet journaling. A little late to the party, if you go by the multitude of blog posts and instagram photos already circulating the web, but still. At first, I was intimidated. The photos of the the spreads were organised and artistic and completely out of my ability to produce. Then I realised that the beauty of the bullet journal is that I get to choose how I want it to look. What I want to go into it. I have started and stopped planners so many times because it just never has what I need or want, but finally,…

    ;more desi mythology please

    I’ll be talking more about it in another post, but Pragati @ The InkedIn Book Blog and Aditi @ A Thousand Words A Million Books hosted a FABULOUS series of guest posts in January where they invited a number of desi bloggers to talk about the representation – or lack of – South Asians in media. If things had worked out for me, this would have been a part of #DesiRepDiscussions, but alas! I had had a medical emergency at the end of December and was unable to take part. Hopefully, this becomes a yearly thing? But I talked to Pragati about using the idea I had had in another…

    instant to-read; the covers edition

    I have never understood the phrase “Never judge a book by its’ cover”. I mean, sure, metaphorically, yeah. The prettiest person can hide the ugliest of souls and hearts. But when it comes to actual books? Sue me, I’m a shallow person. I’m going to pick up the pretty books.* *I literally pick them up off the shelf. Then I read the synopsis and make a decision. But the cover is the initial attraction, so I stand by my point. There have been a number of books over the years that I have read, or put on my TBR, just because of their cover. Some of them have been great.…

    ;ten things i have used as a bookmark

    …besides a bookmark, that is. There’s this post I’ve seen many times – on Tumblr, sometimes on Twitter, and I’ve had a friend send it to me over Whatsapp too, saying I’ve done them all – of unconventional things people have used as bookmarks. I’m pretty sure that post is supposed to be a joke. I’m also pretty sure that my friend is right and I’ve done them all. An old reciept. And when I say old, I mean it’s become faded and gone mostly blank. Ticket stubs. I collect them, mean to put them in a scrapbook, and wind up using them as bookmarks. Technically, scrapbooking? In a way?…

    the year of new beginnings;

    As I write this, it is the last few days of 2017, and I am excited for 2018. The year promises new things for me – my daughter will turn one, my blog will (hopefully) see more traffic as I post more often, and I will be launching my book-related business! Unfortunately, there has been a bit of a delay on the business front as not only has it been difficult to set up the page on my own, a lot has been going on on the personal front and an unexpected medical related emergency has set me back at least another week. So where I was hoping for a…

    books & a cuppa;

    Most of us like to have a glass of something when we read. For me, usually, that glass of something is a hot drink. Coffee, tea, sometimes a chocolate drink, like a Nutella hot chocolate. I choose my drinks based on my moods, and more often than not, my moods are linked to the book I am reading. What I’m saying, of course, is that I categorise my drinks by the type of books I am reading. There are just certain stories and genres that pair well with certain drinks. Chocolate; Fantasy It can be anywhere between overly sweet and dark bitterness. For me, hot chocolate pairs well with a…

    ;reading starter kit

    I’ve been complaining to anyone who sits still long enough to listen that coming up with new and interesting blog posts ideas is so difficult. This has been largely due to the fact that I have been stuck trying to come up with something different and fun to post. A conversation with a new friend, one who is not an avid reader, but wants to get back into reading for fun, gave me this one. We were discussing something I’ve been planning (something she’s gotten excited about, and made me more excited to be doing!) when she suggested I put together a reading starter kit for her and others like…

    ten things I hate about first person point of view;

    I’ve always been told hate is a very strong word. Growing up, my parents preferred that my sisters and I say we strongly disliked something over hate. Frankly, they’re still that way. And for the most part, I agree. I don’t use hate very much, though sometimes I do use it as hyperbole. (A little bit of that is the case of the title, I will admit.) First person point of view is a very hit or miss with me. I was not fond of it for a very long time, and I still have issues with it. I find myself shying away from a lot of novels with first…
