CONTENT CREATION 303: The Thing About Social Media

No matter which platform you create content on, in this time and age having a social media presence is necessary. This is an unfortunate effect of the way things are – of the fact that you are a personality, a brand, and you need to market yourself online in order to bring in your audience.

And it’s not as if there is only one social media platform these days. Twitter, Instagram, TikTok and even Facebook, however dwindling it may be – at least two or three of these platforms are a must to advertise your content and market yourself.

It can be more than a little daunting.

You no longer just create content, you must market that content – and yourself – in a way that people want to engage with. Sometimes it feels like managing your social media presence takes up more time than actively creating content. Cultivating an image is just as much of a necessity as putting out good content.

To do all of that PLUS continuing to create varied and interesting content is overwhelming. It can lead to burnout and exhaustion.

In my case, trying to do all of that on so many platforms at a breakneck pace did lead to burnout and a desire to just stop everything and give up.

Social media may be a must these days, but instead of spreading yourself thin on too many platforms, choose one or two and focus your energy on them. Make yourself a (barebones, if you can) schedule and aim and stick to that rather than overwhelming yourself.

It may take you a little longer to build a following, but in the long run, it will be easier to sustain and manage. It is what I’ve done, and I’ve found it a decent trade off. The slower upload schedule may leave a long gap between posts, but I feel that the content I produce tends to be better.
