July Online Writing Events I’m Looking Forward To

A little bit early, but I’m hyping myself up for a few events that will be happening in the online space this July! These are writing events with an emphasis on community and encouragement, and I’ve had the privilege of taking part in them at least once each before. You can bet I’m taking these events as a way to hit targets I’m setting for myself, and find new writing friends!

GWIC – or the Global Write In Crawl – will take place during the first weekend of July. Described as a “virtual event during which participants can visit the virtual writing spaces (Discord) of other regions, participate in writing events in those regions and earn travel stamps based on their participation”, this year these regions cover not just real-life places but also fictional ones created by participants. In April, the Castle Cafe server was one of the stops for the crawl, and we’ll be there again!

Speaking of the Castle, the Discord server I’m part of – and a mod at, on the planning side of things – will be hosting another event in July. Details are currently hush, hush, secret, secret because we like to surprise everyone closer to the date, but we’ll be encouraging productivity and self care via spreadsheets and bingo and a fun community challenge. There will also be a team challenge, if that’s your cup of tea. It’s a month long event, and anyone can join in at any time of the month. Our aim is to encourage and enable a balance between work and life, and reminding each other to take care of ourselves too.

And lastly we have OHHOW, or the One Hundred Hours Of Writing stream relay! The July event is known as the Weekend Of Writing Wildly, and it should be during the second weekend of the month. I think, but dates have not been finalised yet as far as I can tell. The event runs so smoothly, I’m in awe at the work done behind the scenes to ensure streams raid into each other without fail, on the dot. I’m not sure if I’ll be streaming this time around, it depends on how things are at home – we might be preparing for guests – but I will be catching streams to get words down and hang out with friends! It’s a surefire way to find more writing streamers, and get lots of words down!

I know July is still a way off, but I’m taking June as a way to prepare for these events – not just the one I’m helping to run – and ensure I have everything else I need to do squared away. So far, these virtual events have been fun and productive for me, and I hope to keep that going. Fingers crossed to get edits done for my compilation and a draft down for my new project!

What are some of the events, both writing and otherwise, that will be happening this season that you’re looking forward to?
